چکیده

This paper proposes a distributed multimedia delivery mobile network for video streaming in 3rd generation (3G) mobile communications. The joint design of layered coding (LC) and multiple description coding (MDC) is employed to address the bandwidth fluctuations and packet loss problems in the wireless network and to further enhance the error resilience tools in MPEG-4. A new Internet protocol (IP) differentiated services (DiffServ) video marking algorithm is presented to support an unequal error protection of the LC components. Both intra-RAN (radio access network) handoff and inter-RAN handoff procedures are discussed, which provide path diversity to combat streaming video outage due to handoff in the universal mobile telecommunications system (UMTS). Computer simulation results demonstrate that: (1) the newly proposed IP DiffServ video marking algorithm is more suitable for video streaming in an IP mobile network as compared with the previously proposed algorithm, and (2) the proposed handoff procedures have better performance in terms of handoff latency, end-to-end delay and handoff scalability than that in UMTS. A Method to Reduce Effects of Packet Loss in Video Streaming Using Multiple Description Coding

Multiple description (MD) coding has evolved as a promising technique for promoting error resiliency of multimedia system in real-time application programs over error-prone communicational channels. Although multiple description lattice vector quantization (MDCLVQ) is an efficient method for transmitting reliable data in the context of potential error channels, this method doesn’t consider disc...

Application Layer Scalable Video Coding for the iPhone

Abstract: Videos streamed over the Internet can be received by mobile devices anywhere and anytime. The challenges for Internet streaming include avoiding data loss and playing back the content in the desired quality. A technique for achieving these goals is Scalable Video Coding (H.264-SVC) that adapts the content to network and device characteristics without transcoding. Since there is no pla...

Layered Multiple Description Coding For Robust Video Transmission Over Wireless Ad-Hoc Networks

This paper presents a video transmission system using layered multiple description (coding (MDC) and multi-path transport for reliable video communications in wireless ad-hoc networks. The proposed MDC extends a quality-scalable H.264/AVC video coding algorithm to generate two independent descriptions. The two descriptions are transmitted over different paths to a receiver in order to alleviate...
